Karl Boyes Interview

Karl BoyesKarl started out as a 14 year old playing in a local Manchester league in the UK.

It didn't take him long to become one of the top players and aged 18, Karl held 5 local individual titles at the same time and remained unbeaten in 18 months.

He's moved on since then and now plays in 8-Ball, 9-Ball and 10-Ball tournaments around the world including Europe, USA and Asia.

In 2010, Karl was crowned World team champion, won his first Euro Tour, won the World 8 Ball championship, was a member of the winning Mosconi Cup team winning 5 out of 6 games (losing 6-5 in his only defeat), won a GB9 Tour event and finished the year as Euro Tour No 1.

We caught up with Karl whilst he was in Fujairah, UAE, defending his World 8-Ball title.

“I’m confident as always that I can defend my title, but pool is a funny old sport” says Karl.

“At times you can play average and win and other times you can play some of the best pool you can produce and lose, so you have to keep trying your heart out and take the rough with the smooth.

“The UAE are starting to produce some great players and I don’t think it will be long before someone from here wins something big.

“In 2006 a tour called the IPT was set up by Kevin Trudeau. “I had a little success on the tour and loved the whole buzz, which is something I felt that English 8-Ball didn’t have.

“When it folded, I decided to stay playing 9-ball pool and the rest, as they say, is history!

“Fitness has definitely helped my game, as it got me motivated and also gives you a great feel good factor.

“I believe that’s the reason I didn’t fulfil my potential on the English pool scene.
“Although I had some good wins, I just ate rubbish and got drunk at events.

“I was in a full time job so money wasn’t a issue, whereas pool is now my full time job so I can’t keep getting drunk!”

We asked Karl about his Mosconi Cup debut and what it meant to him.

“It was amazing; without a doubt, the greatest pool moment of my life.

“To be one of the very few pool players to play at York Hall and win the Mosconi is a great honour and I’m grateful that Matchroom Sport invited me.

“Johan Ruijsink (Europe’s Team Coach) made the whole experience what it was.

“He is a great guy with a huge heart, a certain friend for life and he’s not a bad coach either!”

We asked Karl if he may need to consider moving from the UK to fulfil his potential.

“Not at all. Darren(Appleton) & I both lived in England in 2010 and probably had the best seasons on paper out of everyone.

“On a personal note, I’m not too keen on how they run their events. Double elimination to the final is not my scene!”

Karl is soon to be a father with his partner, former World ladies snooker No1 and 2008 Eight-Ball pool champion Lynette Horsburgh. We asked which was more nerve-wracking; playing pool in front of cameras and fans or the prospect of becoming a Dad?

“Pool is just a job I do to earn a wage, but becoming a dad is a massive part of my life; it doesn’t get much bigger. “Luckily for me, I couldn’t ask for a better mother for Daddys little girl.”

Where does the nickname ‘Guapo’ (Spanish for ‘The handsome one’) come from?

“Excuse me? Where do you think?!” Karl laughs.

“All joking aside, it came about from the 2007 world 9ball championships in Manila.

“When we were walking around the streets and malls, a few of the ladies would shout ‘Guapo, guapo’ at me and it’s stuck.

"Some of the lads tried to make out they were shouting at them, but Darren Appleton and Scott Higgins don’t really have a strong case, hahahaha!!”

Finally, Karl was asked whether he has any prized possessions.

“I have a few. A good pal who travels around our major tournaments taking pictures for the websites made all five Mosconi Cup players a picture book from start to finish. “It tells a great story without words and it’s a lovely book. Thanks JP.

“Also, at the start of the Mosconi, Johan said he would give the team flag he made to his personal MVP. This hangs proudly in my pool room.

“Last but not least, is my award for finishing as European number 1 in 2010. It’s a life-size gold 9-Ball encrusted with 58 diamonds.

“I prefer things like this, as they are different from some sad looking tin trophy!”
