We often get asked the question - Are slate bed pool tables better? Most people are aware top quality pool tables are fitted with slate bed playing surfaces but are often unaware why. The use of slate on billiard tables can be traced back to the 1820s, and the first pool table made with slate was in 1845 by The Brunswick Company. The slate's flatness, hardness and consistency made it possible for players to improve their skills, make more accurate shots, and achieve higher levels of performance than were previously possible on wooden tables with cloth playing surfaces.
Since slate was introduced, many other materials have been tried and tested to replicate the accuracy of slate. These included concrete, PVC and even playing surfaces that floated on water. Although some alternatives we relatively successful, nothing was able to offer the same consistency, reliability, and precision that came with a slate bed.
So why are slate pool tables considered superior? Here are several reasons:
1. Durability: Slate is a very hard, dense and durable material that can withstand heavy use without getting warped or damaged. This means that the playing surface stays flat and true, ensuring a consistent and accurate ball roll.
2. Precision: A slate playing surface's smooth flatness allows for greater shot-making precision. This is important for professional players or those who take their game seriously.
3. Performance: Slate pool tables provide a superior playing experience to non-slate tables, as they offer a more natural ball roll, greater control over the cue ball, and more responsive cushions.
4. Longevity: A slate pool table is an investment that can last many years with proper care and maintenance.
5. Value: Slate pool tables retain their value better than non-slate tables, as they are considered a premium option and sought after by serious players.
Overall, slate pool tables are considered the gold standard for serious players and enthusiasts because of their superior durability, precision, performance and longevity. We are biased as we specialise in slate bed pool tables, but that is because they are currently unmatched in their performance.
